These young children are among the thousands of abandoned
children in Romanian orphanages. Even ten years after the fall of Communism
children of all ages still struggle to stay alive. Each abandoned child
has his own heart-wrenching story. Love is unknown to them. I was among
the first to witness the plight of these forgotten children. I was horrified
as I entered the infant orphanage. I saw hundreds of children lying in
"cold" metal cribs.

Our History
In 1995 Serita Stevens went to Romania as a single mother to rescue a
child. She traveled there only having seen one photo of the child chosen for
her by the agency. Despite the fall of Communism, the fledging new Democracy
could barely support itself and had fallen back on the bad habits of its
dictator -selling babies.
Having seen the "Film at 11" Serita did not know what condition the
child would be in or what she would find in the orphanage.
The baby was 9
pounds at 9 months old having been fed mainly on rice water or soaked bread.
Alexzandra could not sit up, roll over, grasp a hand and did not smile. Alert
still as she watched people come and go, Miss Alex fared better than her crib
mates, stacked like sardines in a tin, who had already developed the
cross-eyed failure-to-thrive look. Today, Alexzandra competes as an ice dancer
and gymnast.

"I was told
that the children don't cry because no one comes. Exhausted, Romanian nurses
desperately try to feed hundreds of children. With only one caretaker per
20 infants, the babies lie in their own urine for hours, even days. From lack
of simple human touch, many forsaken children developed crossed eyes. Breakfast
is "brown mush" made of bread crumbs and tea water. Because their
immune systems have weakened, malnutrition and sickness are rampant among
these little ones." -Serita Stevens

As a nurse, Serita knew how crucial early intervention is
in the life of these children. Determined to help them, she became
involved with a group that went into the orphanages, bringing to hug,
play with and feed these children, but Serita realized that more had to
be done. Seeing how her own daughter thrived with the love, attention
and affection, Serita realized that more had to be done for these
children to keep them off the streets and help them become useful
beings.
With her writing career in full swing, Serita decided, with the help of the
other authors, that the anthology of mystery short stories she was editing
would submit 100% of their proceeds to Hugs and Hopes Romania to fund private
children's homes where these abandoned creatures could develop to their fullest
potential.

Our Mission
To take the children out of the orphanages and help them to grow to their
full potential so that like the cornerstone, which was once rejected, they
will grow to steady the foundation of their homeland. Some of them will be
adopted into families both in Romania and here in North America. Others, even
though they are not adopted, will have the love of their foster family and
the skills to help themselves for the new century.

It costs US$2,500/month
to house, clothe, feed and care for 10 children

Give up cigarettes for one day,

to Hugs & Hopes.
For only US$25.00/month,
you can sponsor your own child in Romania.

Our Goal
Our goal is to set up private children's homes where foster parents will live with 5-8
childre n of varying ages. Abandoned children will be taken in as early an
age as possible. With plenty of love, hugs, food, medicine and supervised
play, these children will develop to their fullest potential. Some may be
adopted out, but our goal is to raise the self-esteem and self-abilities of
these children so that they can grow into useful citizens and members of Romanian
society, and bringing their country into the 21st century. With the help of Suflet Romanese,
a Romanian foundation, we are looking for the site of our first home
and have tentatively hired an American couple to go to Romania and assist us
with setting up the Romanian office.
Our first home is now being set up in Craiova, a
western state of Romania, where my daughter Alexzandra was born. With the help
of the Lord, other homes will follow suit. An American family, already hired,
is now in Craiova, setting up the home and working to choose the children who
will most benefit from interaction with the Hugs staff. The 501c-3 status for
IRS chartable foundations has already been applied for. We are a state of California
non-profit corporation. A non-sectarian group, we plan on getting our funds
from donations and fund raising events, as the book sales. The funds donated
will be wired directly to Romania, through Suflet Romanese. We need to
raise approximately US$3000 each month to ensure our success.
| We will send you names, pictures and as much social history as we can
glean. Unfortunately, not much information is available...all we know
about Alex was that she lived with her biological mother and two-year-old
brother in a one-room shack without water, heat or electricity. |

Perfectly healthy children quickly
deteriorate in the deplorable conditions in the orphanages of Romania.
Poor nutrition forces them to nibble on whatever they can find including
chips of peeling, lead-containing paint. The combination not only causes
brain damage, it makes them cross-eyed and eventually blind. Year after
year without care, or even a loving hug then leads to an overwhelming
sense of hopelessness.
The real shame is that it would only take a few
dollars to drastically change this situation. It's unbelievable how much
a small contribution will change the life of an innocent child guilty of
nothing more than being born in Romania instead of the United
States. |
| Will you help us
reach out to these deserving children?
From infants to young teens, these children desperately
need the help of a sponsor like you. You are invited today to become a
child sponsor. Your gift of a few dollars can help to change these
children's lives forever. |
